Hudson Swafford wins the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge
LA QUINTA, CALIF. – Hudson Swafford won his first PGA TOUR tournament at the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge on Sunday, shooting a 5-under-par 67 at the Stadium Course at PGA WEST to finish at 20-under 268.
“They don't give them (wins) away out here,” Swafford said. “It's not easy. I've been close. I've been in the hunt lately. Just keep giving myself, keep putting myself in position, and this just feels unbelievable.”
The victory came in Swafford’s 93rd PGA TOUR start, and his fourth appearance at the CareerBuilder Challenge. With the win, the 29-year-old vaulted 63 spots in the PGA TOUR’s FedExCup standings to sixth and will play in his first Masters in April.
Adam Hadwin, the 54-hole leader who shot a course record 59 at La Quinta Country Club in Saturday’s third round, finished second at 19-under after shooting a 2-under 70 Sunday on the Stadium Course. The 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge will hold fond memories for Hadwin with his historic 59.
“(I) never expected to throw out a 59 on Saturday but went out and got myself in a position to win a golf tournament and I was right in there the whole way, up until the last putt went in,” said Hadwin, who became the eighth player in PGA Tour history to break 60.
Brian Harman and Bud Cauley finished tied for third at 18-under 270.
CareerBuilder Challenge ambassador Phil Mickelson made his 2016-17 PGA TOUR debut and finished T21 at 11-under 277.
The tournament also crowned two new amateur champions through the Pro-Am portion of the event. Dave Colby, of Scottsdale, Ariz., sealed his low-net title with a hole-in-one on the formidable Alcatraz, the Stadium Course’s 17th hole. Kevin Thomsen, of Irving, Tex., was the low gross winner.
Other memorable moments from the 2017 CareerBuilder Challenge include the CareerBuilder Challenge hosting its first concert with Fitz and the Tantrums – who played approximately an hour-long set on the PGA West driving range for over 3,000 fans – and Angel Cabrera’s first-round hole-in-one on the 17th hole at the Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course at PGA WEST.
